On this Fathers Day weekend I would like to take a moment to reflect on the important role that all Father’s play in the spiritual and emotional health of their children. The wonder of being partners with God and the mother of your children begins an amazing journey that never ends once a life has been created. From the moment that you hold your child for the first time you recognize the special gift that you have been given. Your role from that moment on is to help create an environment where your child can marvel at who God is for him or her and grow into the unique individual that God has created them to be and know that they are loved because of your presence in their lives. Please never take the importance of these three aspects for granted. All we have to do is look at the news to hear story after story of what happens when a child grows up without this Fatherly support and involvement. As a priest I am blessed to hear wonderful stories from adult children who relay how their father was an important part of their growing up and at the same time I hear from others who are struggling to make sense of life how the absence of their fathers has scarred them. These individuals just wanted their father to be a part of their life and to care about what was happening. I imagine that this promise to be the best father possible was part of that conversation when you held your child for the first time. May it always be a promise that you know the joy of fulfilling. Happy Father’s Day!
God’s continued peace,
